Questions & Answers (click to expand)

Q. Who are you?

A. I'm a 30-something former public librarian who went private to make time for other endeavors. I remain passionate about helping folks adapt to modern technology in ways that help improve (not complicate) their lives. I especially want to help those who feel intimidated by the technology that they nevertheless must use to function in today's world.

Q. What services do you provide?

A. Private tutoring and troubleshooting in a wide span of modern computer/mobile technology. Here's an abbreviated list, but if you don't see what you're looking for on here, ask anyway. If I can't help, I may know someone who can.

Q. Where do we meet?

A. At your home or an appropriate location of your choice.

Q. How much do you charge?

A. I use a sliding scale rate of $20 - $60 per hour, depending on your budget. You choose the rate you can reasonably afford -- I do not need to know the specifics of your financial situation.

Q. I don't get it...I (the customer) pick the cost?

A. Yes. Here it is -- I don't want to exclude myself from folks with limited means, but if I charged $20 per hour for everyone, I wouldn't be able to do this at all. So if your budget is pretty tight, stick with $20 per hour. If money is no object to you and you want to help me continue to be available for everyone, go with $60 per hour. If you're somewhere in the middle, then $40 per hour may be appropriate.

Q. Are there taxes or additional fees?

A. Tax is included. The only additional fees are a possible travel fee if you're outside my "local" area, and if you're the only client I'm serving in that outside area that day. The travel fee ranges from $10-$40 per session -- please view the map with details below these questions.

Q. Will the rate I pay affect the quality of service I receive?

A. No. I give my full attention, patience, and expertise to everyone I assist. The only situation where a higher-paying client might receive preferential treatment is for scheduling with repeat appointments. However, this is rare, and I try to fit everyone in a day and time that works for both of us.

Q. My friend and I both need assistance on the same topic -- can the two of us be in one session?

A. Within reason and adjustment to the rate, yes. I can accommodate groups of up to 10 people. However, this is not suggested when dealing with situations or materials that you would want to keep private.

Q. How long is a session?

A. 1-2 hours is typical, though we can go longer depending on our respective schedules.

Q. Can't I just get free help at my local library?

A. Probably! Many public libraries provide some kind of assistance for folks needing help with their personal technology. However most will not make home visits, and some people might find their services lacking in one way or another. Still, if you can find what you need for free, I encourage you to use it.

Q. ¿Hablas español?

A. Lo siento, no.
